Alaskan Cruise 2016 - Tips, Tricks, and FYIs

My first cruise ever was this past August on Holland America (MS Westerdam). We left from Seattle and spent seven days traveling up and back from Alaska. It was great and I highly recommend it.

I thought I would draw attention to a few things that I learned that might be helpful to others or a reminder to myself for the next cruise I take. This is supplemental to the endless paperwork and info the cruise line gives you.

Tips/Tricks:
Before you go:
  • Read this: http://cruisenotebook.com/Notebook/Tips.html
    • It was extremely helpful to prepare me for my first cruise
  • I had no cell reception with AT&T on the ship even when in port.
    • They charge international rates for Canada so be very aware of when you are in Alaska and when you are in Canada.
  • Random things I would recommend bringing:
    • Highlighter – for picking which activities you are interested in.
    • Notebook (fits in a pocket) – for writing those activities you are interested in so you don’t have to take the oversized itinerary with you. Also, good for making notes about your trip.
    • Travel mug/water bottle – you can fill up with drinks at the buffet and take with you out on the deck or to the other areas of the ship.
    • A watch – if you don’t want to lug around your phone that has no reception anyway, you do want to make sure you have a way to keep track of time.
    • Power strip/extension cord - there are limited electrical plugs and they can be in awkward places. There was one outlet in the room and one in the bathroom.
  • If you are travelling with another person and splitting up the charges, you should know general room charges will be automatically applied to whomever the primary person who made the reservation is. Otherwise, they will swipe your card to keep things separate.
    • When setting up the reservation, you might want to keep this in mind.
    • For example, if TC made the reservation and you got into the mini-bar, it will automatically go on TC’s account.
    • You can go to the main desk at any point and check the charges applied to your account. It takes about 24 hours to make any changes. Everyone tends to do it on the last day and there can be a line if you wait.

On Ship:
  • The ship is open for touring of all the areas until 10p on the first day. The usually offer tours a couple of times before departure.
    • The tours start on time. We ended up getting there 2 mins late and had to play catch up trying to find them.
  • Drinks that are free: water, coffee, tea, and juice. Pop/soda and alcohol cost money.
    • Even though water is free, the bottle of water in the room are considered part of the mini-bar and can cost up to $5
  • The casino area will let you use cash or charge to your room so if you want to limit your gambling, you can use cash.
    • The poker tables do not use real cards. It was one big video table. They had a demo and let you try it. The rest of the tables did have regular cards.
    • The casino hours are based on the gaming rules for the part of the world the ship is in at that given moment so in the off hours, you can ask for lessons if you want to learn any of the games.
  • If you like hot showers, there is a red little safety button you can press in to make the water hotter. Otherwise, cranked all the way to the red button is just a level above lukewarm.
  • Look at the schedule for that day for hours on the restaurants. Sometimes they change them for certain ports.
  • The portions of food are more European than American when eating at the restaurant or ordering room service. So, the meals seem a lot smaller than you would expect when they talk about all the food you can eat on a cruise ship.
    • For example: “A plate of cookies” showed up and it was 3 small cookies. A pot of coffee or tea is about a cup and a half.
  • When eating in the general dining area (not the restaurants that charge), you have several options for each of the three courses. You can order more than one from each category.
    • If you can’t decide between the crème brule or the cheesecake, you can get both.
  • If you have food allergies, you need to let them know in advance. Depending on the allergy, they may have you pick your meal for the following day so that they can make sure it is prepared away from whatever foods you might be allergic.
    • They take this very seriously so don’t tell them you are allergic to something if you just don’t like it.
  • Room service is totally worth it. The menu isn’t extensive, but it has a decent set of choices including recommendations if your stomach is not liking the waves.
    • It takes about 45 mins.
    • It is included and no extra charge.
    • You need to call them to pick up the tray. You shouldn’t leave it outside the door like at a hotel because it is a hazard.
  • They have a fruit basket and ask you what fruit you want in it.
    • This gets refilled when they do the morning room cleaning. They also give you ice in the morning.

FYIs:
Before you go:
  • They do not provide irons because of fire hazards. It is $3 a piece and takes a day in advance.
    • They do not allow you to check garment bags because it is awkward when they are going through all the security checks with that much luggage.
    • The hangers are wood and they give you about 10. You can request more, but they are wire hangers and could take up to 24 hours for them to get them to you.
  • The last port which is usually Victoria, BC always gets screwed the most when there are schedule issues. It is also the port you are in the shortest amount of time.
    • I do not recommend booking anything in advance for this because of this.
    • Instead, I HIGHLY recommend doing the Pedicab tour that can be customized.
      • Ask for Kevin Keirle who was fantastic and totally reasonably priced for all that we got. You can find him here: www.victoriapedicab.com
On Ship:
  • The elevators on the ship have floor mats that tell you what day it is. This was surprisingly helpful on a weeklong cruise.
  • Alaska is an hour behind Pacific time so you gain an hour head up and lose that hour coming back. They do a good job at making sure you are aware of this.
  • They don’t stamp your passport when headed into Victoria. They check it quickly, but since the cruise line has verified all of them, it is just a quick look. The same coming back into the US.

The Art Assignment

You may not have heard of Sarah Urist Green before, but she recently stepped down as the curator of contemporary art at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Her new endeavor is to produce and host a web series for PBS Digital called, "The Art Assignment."

As the website describes the show, "We take you around the U.S. to meet artists and solicit assignments from them that we can all complete." The videos are about 8-10 minutes long. Each week they talk to an artist, the artist gives an assignment, Green then explains the background and history of that theme/type of art and then you see one or more examples of people doing their assignment. It is designed to be easily done no matter where you live or what kind of art you do. Later, after people have submitted their assignments on various social media platforms (Twitter, Tumblr, YouTube, etc), they put together a highlights video showing off people's work to their audience.

The show is hosted by Sarah Urist Green and her husband, John Green, whom you may know as a best selling author and prolific YouTuber. If you don't know him, you should go look him up now: HERE. They are super cute together and work well as a team. Sarah is referenced in John's videos as "The Yeti" because she was often talked about, but rarely seen. My introduction to her was in one of his videos where he was talking about Twilight. He was saying, "You almost get the feeling from reading the books, that, like a woman can't be whole until she has a strong independent man to take care of her. When of course, the fact is a woman needs a strong man to take care of her like a fish needs a bicycle. I mean, just ask the Yeti. (yells off screen) Hey Sarah! Do you need a man to bench press your body weight in order to feel whole?" To which she responds instantly, "Obviously, not."

There is a great interview with both of them HERE that you should read. In it Sarah says, "The Art Assignment's concern is generating ideas, the creative process, and the act of making. This is not a high pressure situation for those responding to the assignment. Judging and winning will not be part of it. I will put together episodes that show what I think are some of the best viewer responses to the assignments, but I really only see that as a way of aggregating content and making it easier to find the good stuff. The "reward" will be making something cool and showing it to other people on the internet."

There have been several assignments so far and I plan on doing some of them and posting them here. I figured I would explain what the show is and why you should watch.

Winter Blog Cleaning

I reorganized my blog a bit. It was totally accidental. I went on to change one thing, which was the background photo.

The background photo is actually one I took. This was a far more difficult undertaking than I thought it would be. Between the tiling and width differences, it took many tries to get it right. MANY TRIES. However, I am pretty happy with it. It was from walking around downtown Seattle snapping random pics for my History of Photography final.

Of course, it was a black and white photo so I felt the colors had to be changed to match. My signature blue color scheme felt weird. Once that was changed, the fonts all looked weird to me. I am terrible at design. I just don't have that skill to know what I want. I had to look through every single font before making a decision. I would be a terrible client for someone doing this for me.

I vaguely remembered a few people complaining about the comments section. I tweaked a few things in there so that should be easier.

It was then that I realized it has been a while since I checked the links to my friend's blogs and websites. I got rid of a few links that haven't been updated in the last two years. I added a blog by my friend, Theresa, called "Transitional Beauty." It is what she went through to get her Masters in Art from the same grad school I am attending. You should totally check it out. It is well written and has cool paintings. Also, if you want to laugh, read "Ideological Activities of a Cranky Yankee" by my friend, Susan (whom I call "Zens"). An example of her blog is Skynet & You, which is what happens when you leave you laptop open and have a cat. All of these links are to the right.

I guess linking to places where I am on the web is a thing people are supposed to do. I had no links to any of the social media sites that I am on. Whoops. So that's done.

Those links pushed down my "Who writes this?" section. The photo in there was terribly out of date as was the description that went with it. I picked what I thought was the best picture for this blog. I took it as part of an assignment for my portraiture class last fall.

Meanwhile, four hours have passed and it snowed.

Virtual Me

I came across this website (http://api.modelmydiet.com/eywomen) that creates a virtual version of yourself and then you can input the weight you want to be so you can see the difference. Now, it doesn't take into consideration that people carry their weight differently so it is for people, like myself, that carries it all over instead of all in the stomach or legs.

Since a virtual version is easier to post than a real pic, here is my virtual before and after photo if I lose the pounds I want to:

I find this motivating because it is hard to visualize being smaller when you are heavy and have been for decades. I played around with what it would look like and this is actually 120 pounds which is closer to my ideal weight. Personally, I cannot think of myself this small. When I lost the weight last time, I got halfway to the goal and it didn't really feel any different. I was in smaller clothes, but it didn't feel any different to me.

I am really trying to stay motivated this time which is hard. I miss my trainer I had when I was in LA and lost all the weight. I put all the weight back on when he stopped training me. I don't think I will ever find a program as awesome as the Batman Workout which is sad. It was so awesome. I felt like I was going to die, but it was so worth it. Running around a gym, isn't the same. Plus, I am doing this by myself. With my schedule, I can't workout with anyone else since most people don't want to go to the gym at 11p or later depending on how busy work is.

At least food isn't the issue, I'm not an over-eater. I can stick to diet easy enough. It is the workout that is usually the deciding factor and the first thing I end up dropping. I am just powering through. I need to find stuff to do outside of the gym to do that is fun. I wish I found running fun, but it bores the crap out of me. I prefer something with more variety.

Watching the Biggest Loser on Netflix is helping. People dropping hundreds of pounds and you can see the changes each episode. I just fast forward over the drama. I prefer my drama to have Timothy Olyphant shooting people or battling over the 7 Kingdoms.

Emerald City Comicon 2011

As you may or may not know, last year I was the main photographer for Seattle's comic book convention called "Emerald City Comicon." It was over a weekend and a lot of fun. A bit exhausting, but fun.

They asked me back for this year and picked a handful of my photos to use in their press room so that anyone writing about the convention could have photos with their articles. You can find those photos HERE.

This year should be fun ask guests include William Shatner (Capt. Kirk), James Marsters (Spike from Buffy/Angel), Jonathan Frakes (Lt. Riker), Brent Spiner (Data) and the rest you can see HERE.

Last year, I managed not to buy anything except two t-shirts for my favorite geek girls (Shelby & Sarah), but I did start reading two new webcomics that I have been following ever since. I started and read the backlog of: Hijinks Ensue and Little Vampires. They are nothing like each other, but both are great and I highly recommend checking them out. Hijinks Ensue is filled with a lot of pop culture references that are hysterical. Little Vampires is an adorable weekly webcomic following these cute little vampires who happen to be obsessed with blood oranges.

Lessons I learned from last year:

  1. I do not need to go to the costume contest. They have a photographer covering it and it made for too long of a day.
  2. I need a better flash. There are too many lighting issues and I need a flash that recycles power faster.
  3. Eat something and drink more water. I had been away from San Diego Comicon too long and completely forgot the basics.
  4. I don't need to go in more than an hour before they let people in. It makes for a long day and there weren't enough photo ops.
  5. I need two lens. My basic all-purpose lens and my telephoto.
This will be happening in March right before midterms so it should be interesting. I'll update you on everything once it is done.

New Twitter Account

As promised with my resolutions, I have begun separating me from myself. I had a previous personal twitter account which I hardly ever use. I probably won't use it again anyway.

My new photography based twitter is: http://twitter.com/KathyAnnPhotos

I'm a little miffed that PhotosbyKathyAnn was one letter too long. I've been trying to stay consistent with that as it is my gmail address as well.

I'll use this to let people know when new blogs and photos are up or any photography news. I'm sure I'll retweet other people's stuff too. Feel free to follow me there.

Websites I Think Everyone Should Read

I use a website called "Bloglines" which allows me to look at multiple websites one at a time without having to go to each site individually. It lists the side in the frame on the left and opens the website on the frame on the right.
